Roberto Clemente Essays - Roberto Clemente, Clemente, Free Essays

Roberto Clemente Essays - Roberto Clemente, Clemente, Free Essays Roberto Clemente Team: Pittsburgh Pirates Roberto Clemente was born in Carolina, Puerto Rico on August 18th 1934. He was the first Hispanic baseball player to be inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame. He was also the second baseball player to be put on a postage stamp. Roberto Clemente was plagued with back pain during his career, but still he proved to be one of the greatest baseball players of all time. Roberto Clemente had always like baseball. He was also fortunate to join a professional Puerto Rican baseball team at the age of 17. He spent his first season with the Brooklyn Dodgers farm team. He was thinking about quitting because he was treated very strangely. The franchise was trying to hide Clemente from the Giants so when he played good, they would bench him. But when he did bad, they would keep him in the game. Clemente later returned to Puerto Rico after his first, disappointing season to visit his brother, who was dying from a brain tumor. While he was there, a drunk driver smashed into his car and permanently damaged three spinal discs, which would bother him through the rest of his career. In 1954, the Pittsburgh Pirates drafted Clemente for $4,000 and put him out in right field. During his first season he gunned down 18 runners. He got 20 runners out in his second season. In his second season he had a .311 batting average and had 5 homeruns. Then in 1958 he led the National League in outfield assists with 22. In 1960 Clemente had a fantastic year. He hit 16 homers, batted .314 and had 94 R.B.I?s (runs batted in). He led his team to the National League pennant. And shocked the nation with an upset over the Yankees in the World Series. Clemente batted .310 for the series. He won his first batting title in 1961, hitting .351 with 23 homers, 10 triples, and 89 RBIs. Clemente used to overswing the bat and his head would "bob" when he swung a bat. So Clemente started using a heavier bat. After that he went on to enjoy 11 of 12 seasons with his batting average above .300. In late December of 1972 an earthquake struck Nicaragua. More than 6,000 people were killed, 20,000 injured. After hearing that some of the supplies they had sent to Nicaragua were not getting to the right people, Clemente decided to take matters into his own hands. He flew to Nicaragua in a cargo plane and make sure that distribution was carried out properly. On New Year's Eve he boarded an overloaded DC-7 Air Force Plane that he rented for $4,000 to fly to Nicaragua. The plane crashed into the ocean shortly after takeoff. Roberto Clemente was the first Hispanic baseball player ever inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, and in 1994 a statue of him was unveiled at Three Rivers Stadium at the all-star game.

Definition and Examples of Contact Languages

Definition and Examples of Contact Languages A contact language is a marginal language (a type of lingua franca) used for purposes of basic communication by people with no common language. English as lingua franca (ELF), says Alan Firth, is a contact language between persons who share neither a common native tongue nor a common (national) culture, and for whom English is the chosen foreign language of communication (1996). Examples and Observations Ancient Greek around the Mediterranean basin, or later Latin throughout the Roman Empire, were both contact languages. They tend to vary in use in different local contexts, and there is often a great deal of local language interference. Latin, for example, later developed many local forms which eventually became French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and so on. The contact language usually dominates in situations in which the speakers of that language have military or economic power over other language users. . . .When the contact between groups of people is prolonged, a hybrid language can develop known as a pidgin. These tend to occur in situations where one language dominates, and there are two or more other languages at hand.(Peter Stockwell, Sociolinguistics: A Resource Book for Students. Routledge, 2002)The most often cited example of a (bilingual) mixed system is Michif, a contact language that developed in Canada between French-speaking fur traders and their Cree-speaking wive s.(Naomi Baron, Alphabet to Email: How Written English Evolved. Routledge, 2001) English (or ELF) as a Contact Language- English as a Lingua Franca (henceforth ELF) refers, in a nutshell, to the worlds most extensive contemporary use of English, in essence, English when it is used as a contact language between people from different first languages (including native English speakers).(Jennifer Jenkins,  English as a Lingua Franca in the International University: The Politics of Academic English Language Policy. Routledge, 2013)- ELF [English as a Lingua Franca] provides a kind of global currency for people from a great variety of backgrounds who come into contact with one another and use the English language as a default means of communication. ELF as a contact language is often used in short contact situations, such that fleeting English norms are in operation, with variation being one of the hallmarks of ELF (Firth, 2009). Thus ELF does not function as a territorialized and institutionalized second language, nor can it be described as a variety with its own li terary or cultural products, as is the case with the English language used for instance in Singapore, Nigeria, Malaysia, or India, where WE [World Englishes] have emerged in different ways from much longer contact situations.(Juliane House, Teaching Oral Skills in English as a Lingua Franca.  Principles and Practices for Teaching English as an International Language, ed. by  Lubna Alsagoff et al. Routledge, 2012) ModificationsA very naive view of language contact would probably hold that speakers take bundles of formal and functional properties, semiotic signs so to speak, from the relevant contact language and insert them into their own language. . . . A probably more realistic view held in language contact research is that whatever kind of material is transferred in a situation of language contact, this material necessarily experiences some sort of modification through contact.(Peter Siemund, Language Contact in Language Contact and Contact Languages, ed. by P. Siemund and N. Kintana. John Benjamins, 2008)

Organization Balanced Scorecard Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Organization Balanced Scorecard - Assignment Example re is revenue growth by proposing income generating projects, operation on the profit growth and ensuring determining the short term solvency of the company. These objectives are in line with the vision of the company as they ensure which is offering low prices to the consumers. The company makes sure that it capitalizes on the large market by selling its products at lower prices. The need for a balanced scorecard in order to determine whether the company is headed in the right direction in terms of profitability cannot be understated. Therefore, this is done by measuring each objective in the financial sector with a quantified target metric that is associated with it. This process has helped companies understand their position and the weak and strong areas in the organization. In this way, the priority of the objectives can be understood in the organization and therefore, it becomes easier for the management to understand which objective should be implemented first based on its impo rtance. Further, it shows how the different sectors of the company are performing in relation to the vision and the mission of the company. Traditionally most federal agencies measure their managerial presentation by mainly focusing on internal process performances; they also looked at factors such as the number of full time equals that were allotted. However, on the other hand the private sector has always focused on the monetary procedures as their bottom line; this includes return on investment, earnings per share and even market share. It is imperative to understand that alone, neither of the approaches can be able to give stipulation for the full viewpoint of an organization’s routine. However, by ensuring that there is a balance that exists between the internal process as well as results from financial measures, managers can be able to have a complete picture as to whether the company should be able to make improvements. For this reason, the balanced score card was used as it

Physics and Surfing :: physics surf surfing

When a wind begins to blow across a flat body of water ripples form almost immediately, then wavelets, and finally nearly fully developed waves, having almost definite wave lengths and shapes. Surface waves will also form, during calm wind, where opposing currents meet. This is known as current rips and can be dangerous for small or overloaded boats. A good estimate of the wind speed can be obtained by observing its effect on the water. For example, at 5 knots only small wavelets can be observed. A 10 knot wind speed will produce a few whitecaps. At 15 knots whitecaps can be seen up to 30% of the area. At 20 knots whitecaps can be seen up to 60% of the area. At 30 knots whitecaps and spray can be seen all over and foam from the breakers begins to form. At 40 knots streaks of foam can easily be seen. At 50 knots visibility is reduced and the sea begins to take on a white appearance from all the foam. Current directions and speed will greatly affect the areas covered by spray and breakers. Factors Affecting Wave Heights: 1. Wind. 2. Wind duration. 3. Length and width of wind fetch. (This is the distance over the water in which the wind blows in nearly the same direction.) 4. Depth of the water. 5. Direction and speed of the current. 6. Rate of precipitation. 7. Air temperature. 8. Amounts of flotsam, ice, or seaweed in the fetch area. 1. How high will the waves get? Maximum wave heights (in feet) will not get any higher than * the wind speed in knots. This is correct over 90% of the time. Note: Wave height begins to increase when the depth of the water is less than or equal to 1/4 of the wavelength because the wave starts to touch the sea floor. 2. What is the difference between waves and swells? Waves occur where the wind is blowing. Swells are waves that have moved away from the wind generating area and frequently give warnings of an approaching storm. 3. What is the significant wave height? Significant wave height (SWH) is the average height of 1/3 of the highest waves, or the height of the waves an observer is most likely to report. The significant wave height is used in the marine forecasts. Table 1.Wave heights in relationship to the significant wave height (SWH) Most frequent wave height .5 x SWH

Four Phases of Business Cycle Essay

Business Cycle (or Trade Cycle) is divided into the following four phases :- Prosperity Phase : Expansion or Boom or Upswing of economy. Recession Phase : from prosperity to recession (upper turning point). Depression Phase : Contraction or Downswing of economy. Recovery Phase : from depression to prosperity (lower turning Point). Diagram of Four Phases of Business Cycle The four phases of business cycles are shown in the following diagram :- The business cycle starts from a trough (lower point) and passes through a recovery phase followed by a period of expansion (upper turning point) and prosperity. After the peak point is reached there is a declining phase of recession followed by a depression. Again the business cycle continues similarly with ups and downs. Explanation of Four Phases of Business Cycle The four phases of a business cycle are briefly explained as follows :- 1. Prosperity Phase When there is an expansion of output, income, employment, prices and profits, there is also a rise in the standard of living. This period is termed as Prosperity phase. The features of prosperity are :- High level of output and trade. High level of effective demand. High level of income and employment. Rising interest rates. Inflation. Large expansion of bank credit. Overall business optimism. A high level of MEC (Marginal efficiency of capital) and investment. Due to full employment of resources, the level of production is Maximum and there is a rise in GNP (Gross National Product). Due to a high level ofeconomic activity, it causes a rise in prices and profits. There is an upswing in the economic activity and economy reaches its Peak. This is also called as a Boom Period. 2. Recession Phase The turning point from prosperity to depression is termed as Recession Phase. During a recession period, the economic activities slow down. When demand starts falling, the overproduction and future investment plans are also given up. There is a steady decline in the output, income, employment, prices and profits. The businessmen lose confidence and become pessimistic (Negative). It reduces investment. The banks and the people try to get greater liquidity, so credit also contracts. Expansion of business stops, stock market falls. Orders are cancelled and people start losing their jobs. The increase in unemployment causes a sharp decline in income and aggregate demand. Generally, recession lasts for a short period. 3. Depression Phase When there is a continuous decrease of output, income, employment, prices and profits, there is a fall in the standard of living and depression sets in. The features of depression are :- Fall in volume of output and trade. Fall in income and rise in unemployment. Decline in consumption and demand. Fall in interest rate. Deflation. Contraction of bank credit. Overall business pessimism. Fall in MEC (Marginal efficiency of capital) and investment. In depression, there is under-utilization of resources and fall in GNP (Gross National Product). The aggregate economic activity is at the lowest, causing a decline in prices and profits until the economy reaches its Trough (low point). 4. Recovery Phase The turning point from depression to expansion is termed as Recovery orRevival Phase. During the period of revival or recovery, there are expansions and rise in economic activities. When demand starts rising, production increases and this causes an increase in investment. There is a steady rise in output, income, employment, prices and profits. The businessmen gain confidence and become optimistic (Positive). This increases investments. The stimulation of investment brings about the revival or recovery of the economy. The banks expand credit, business expansion takes place and stock markets are activated. There is an increase in employment, production, income and aggregate demand, prices and profits start rising, and business expands. Revival slowly emerges into prosperity, and the business cycle is repeated. Thus we see that, during the expansionary or prosperity phase, there is inflation and during the contraction or depression phase, there is a deflation.

Essay The Territorial Sxpansion of the United States in...

The Territorial Sxpansion of the United States in the 1840’s Throughout 1815 to 1860, the USA changed faster than in the previous 200 years. It was seen as the land of opportunities and masses of Europeans migrated to the USA. Population figures doubled every 25 years. The number of states rised from 18 in 1815, to 30 by 1860. The agrarian society was soon replaced by a growing capitalist and commercial economy and there were advancements in transport and communication. Cities grew and the country was divided into three main sectors- agrarian west: mass immigration and industrial revolution in the Northeast and the slaveholding south. People moved westwards searching for new lives and†¦show more content†¦It was looked up as a shameful blot on the American record. Expansion of slavery was another important reason that led to territorial expansion. Eli Whitney’s invention of the Cotton Gin in 1793, made cotton production easier and more profitable, enabling it to spread from the Southeast into the old Indian lands of the west. The South was transformed by the expansion of cotton production. Due to the rise of textile industry in England, a huge demand for cotton was created. Cotton production rose from 3000 bales in 1790, to a 100,000 in 1801 and nearly 4 million in 1860. This caused the revitalization of slavery, which was a lucrative business, especially during the Civil War. The south’s economic dependence was mainly due to slavery. Illegal imports of slaves from Africa, led to a substantial rise in population. It wasn’t until 1794, when the first hard-surfaced road connected Philadelphia and Lancaster led to transport improvement and therefore a general improvement of communication. Without transport improvement, expansion would have taken a much slower path. Most turnpikes were financed and built privately and the road running across the Appalachians led thousands of pioneer families to settle westwards. Other forms of competition subsided the building of roads. After John Fitch had successfully demonstrated a paddle wheeler, it was Robert Fulton who made
